NAPAOnline.com 250 - Jay Sauter Notes

Jay Sauter #43 Quality Farm Stores/Morton Salt Chevrolet Monte Carlo

NAPAOnline 250 / August 18, 2001

Michigan International Speedway

Last Race – Indianapolis Raceway Park … Jay Sauter qualified 13th and finished 14th in the Kroger 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park on August 4th. Sauter was forced to pit on lap nine for an oil leak problem and battled his way from the rear of the field to post the 14th-place finish. After twenty-two races this season, Sauter stands 17th in the overall Busch Series points.

The car’s the same, the location has changed… Jay Sauter will drive the same car in the NAPAOnline.com 250 this weekend that he drove in the Auto Club 300 at the California Speedway on April 28th. Both are fast, wide two-mile speedways that have similar banking. Sauter qualified 25th and, after an early-race mechanical problem, battled back to finish 28th in California earlier this year.

Sauter on his past races at Michigan Int’l Speedway … Although he has only two NASCAR starts at Michigan, Jay Sauter feels like he has lots of experience at the two-mile track.

"When I ran the truck race at Michigan in ’99, RCR ran a second truck that my dad, Jim, drove. Dad has lots of experience at Michigan in ARCA and Winston Cup competition, as well as setting up the IROC cars to race here. Following him in practice and watching him drive this track really helped me get adjusted to MIS. The lessons learned paid off with a strong second place finish."

"Last year in the Busch race, I had a good car but feel to the rear of the field early with a mechanical problem. Then, I drove back up to the top ten before an alternator problem ended our hopes."

Sauter on the NAPAOnline.com 250 … "I really like the Michigan International Speedway. It a very ‘racy’ track that is wide and fast. I ran good here last year and at California earlier this year, but mechanical problems kept us from two strong finishes. I feel like I’ll have a good shot this weekend. The season is heading towards the ‘homestretch’ and the Quality Farm Stores/Morton Salt team wants to finish strong."
