Hills Brothers Coffee 300 - Jay Sauter Notes

Jay Sauter #43 Morton Salt/Quality Farm Stores Chevrolet

Hills Bros. Coffee 300 / July 14, 2001

The Hills Bros. Coffee 300 will be the inaugural NASCAR Busch Series race at the 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway.

Last Race – Watkins Glen … Jay Sauter qualified 21st and finished 12th in the GNC Live Well 200 at the 2.45-mile Watkins Glen International road course on Sunday, July 8th. Sauter came from the rear of the field three times in the 82-lap, 200-mile race at The Glen to earn his 12th-place finish. On the basis of his 9th top-fifteen finish of the season, Sauter gained two positions in the overall Busch Series points. Sauter now stands 15th, but only 33 points behind Rich Bickle for 14th and 156 behind Chad Little for the 10th position.

Sauter Likes The "New" Tracks … The Busch Series has raced at two "new" facilities thus far in the 2001 season – the Nashville Superspeedway and Kentucky Speedway. Jay Sauter has been a strong contender in both races. He qualified ninth at Nashville, worked his way to the front to lead a lap, then suffered engine problems to finish 39th. Sauter captured his first career Bud Pole Award at Kentucky and ran in the top ten all evening to post a ninth-place finish. Now, at Chicagoland …

When It Rains, It Pours … The Hills Bros. Coffee 300 will be the third of six races this season where the #43 Curb-Agajanian Chevrolet will carry the Morton Salt logo and colors in the primary sponsor positions. After Chicagoland, remaining Morton Salt races are Indianapolis (Aug. 4), Phoenix (Oct. 27), and Homestead (Nov. 10).

Brother Johnny Dominating The ASA …Jay Sauter’s younger brother, Johnny, has been tearing up the ASA (America Speed Association) in recent weeks. Johnny Sauter became the first ASA driver in history to win five consecutive races with his win at Chicago last Sunday. Johnny has six wins (in the last seven races) and three poles this season. Johnny now leads both the championship and rookie point standings.

Sauter on the Hills Brothers Coffee 300 and the Chicagoland Speedway … "I’m looking forward to our first trip to the new Chicagoland Speedway. I drive the Morton Salt/Quality Farm Stores car this weekend and I hope that we can continue to have success on the ‘new’ Busch tracks this season. The Thursday open test day should be really interesting. Chicagoland is a very fast track, but needs another groove to race in. Hopefully, it will develop a second groove by race time Saturday. We’re in a very important stretch of races right now in the Busch Series, and every position in every race is important. I’ve still got my sights set on a top-ten finish in the points this year, so we have to keep focused and get the most we can each race. This is a big race for our team."
