Hills Brothers Coffee 300 - Jimmie Johnson Notes

Johnson Takes to the “Windy City”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 11, 2001) - Jimmie Johnson is making his first trip to the “Windy City” this weekend for the inaugural NASCAR Busch Series race at Chicagoland Speedway. Johnson and the Excedrin Racing team are looking forward to the third of four inaugural races on the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series schedule, including Nashville Superspeedway, Kentucky Speedway and Kansas Speedway.

“Since Chicago is a new race on the NASCAR Busch Series schedule, we really don’t have much to go on,” stated Johnson. “The Excedrin Racing team is taking a car that we ran on a similar track earlier in the season. We made some adjustments that will hopefully make the No. 92 Excedrin Chevrolet Monte Carlo fast this weekend.”

Johnson looks forward to inaugural races because they offer an even playing field to experienced and inexperienced drivers alike. “When we go to a new track we are all equal,” said Johnson. “No one knows more about the track because none of us have had the opportunity to test. We all have to go out on the first day of practice and familiarize ourselves with the track. Every driver is a rookie at an inaugural race.”

Since no team has any experience on the new Chicagoland Speedway, NASCAR has scheduled two extra practices for Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, prior to qualifying on Friday afternoon. The extra practice will help teams get a better feel for the 1.5-mile tri-oval.

“I talked to some Winston Cup drivers that tested at Chicagoland Speedway and they say that the track is really fast,” explained Johnson. “I also hear that it has a lot of grip. I think the Excedrin Racing team will do well this weekend in Chicago.”

Johnson will be signing autographs at the Walgreens on Ingalls Avenue in Joliet, Ill. on Thursday evening, July 12. Johnson, along with the No. 92 Excedrin Chevrolet Monte Carlo, will be available for pictures and autographs from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Fans can register to win Excedrin Racing apparel and a pair of gloves worn by Johnson in the June 2 NASCAR Busch Series race at Dover Downs International Speedway.

Johnson maintains a top-10 position in the NASCAR Busch Series driver points standings heading into the 19th race in the 2001 season. The Hills Bros. 300 is set to air live on the NBC Television Network and MRN Radio Network starting at 3:30 p.m. EST this Saturday July 14.
