Cheez-It 250 - Matt Kenseth Notes

Matt Kenseth / Visine Racing Pre-Race Notes for Bristol Motor Speedway

KENSETH UP AND DOWN AT BRISTOL: Matt Kenseth has experienced both highs and lows at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. Kenseth was victorious at the ..533-mile track in the fall of 1999. One year later, however, he failed to qualify the Visine Chevrolet for the race. In six career Busch Series starts at Bristol, Kenseth has recorded one win and a pair of top-five finishes.

DNQ AT BRISTOL: Kenseth has just one DNQ in his NASCAR Busch Series career and it came last fall at Bristol.

POINTS STANDINGS: The Visine Racing Team improved to 10th in the owners' points standings following a second-place finish last Saturday at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. Kenseth is currently 17th in the drivers' points standings with 484 points.

KENSETH TO DRIVE NEXT TWO RACES: Matt Kenseth is scheduled to drive the next two NASCAR Busch Series races in Bristol and Texas. Kenseth's 2001 NASCAR Busch Series schedule includes a total of 20 events. In four Busch Series races this season, Kenseth has posted a pair of top-five finishes - Daytona (3rd) and Darlington (2nd). He will hand over driving duties of the Visine Chevrolet to rookie Clay Rogers for the Busch Series race at Nashville Superspeedway on April 14. It will be Rogers' second NASCAR Busch Series event.

MATT KENSETH's Comments on bristol: "Bristol's a cool track to race. We've had mixed results in the Busch car there. We've won and also been involved in accidents here and there. It's real easy to get in trouble. It's so small that if there's a wreck around you, you're pretty much going to get tangled up in it. The key for us this weekend is to qualify near the front and stay up front. That gives you the best chance to stay out of trouble. Fast pit stops to maintain track position will also be important."

Crew Chief Russ Strupp's Comments on bristol: "We're taking 'Chassis No. 8' to Bristol. It's the same car that Clay (Rogers) raced in at Rockingham. It's also the same car that we won with at the fall Bristol race in '99. Last spring at Bristol, this car was heading for a real strong finish and a lapped car wrecked us. That's what makes this race so tough. There's no margin for error to get to victory lane. You have to be mentally prepared and ready to fix the car quickly if you get in trouble in the race. We'll have two spotters for this race to help us stay out of trouble - one to watch ahead and one to watch Matt. We'll be going with last spring's setup for qualifying. The car was a little tight then, so we'll loosen it up just a bit. I think we can win at Bristol this week. Matt's experience and the team's experience at this track will be a benefit to us."

Last year's CHEEZ-IT 250 (March 25, 2000): Kenseth's streak of five consecutive top-10 finishes to start the 2000 season came to a hault at Bristol Motor Speedway. Thanks to an accident on lap 228, he drove the Visine Chevrolet to a 27th-place finish. Kenseth started the 250-lap event in the seventh position, and the Visine Racing Team serviced the No. 17 Chevrolet for the first time at lap 60, during the third caution of the race. Kenseth led 21 laps and rarely ran outside of the top-five. The Visine Chevrolet took its final pit stop on lap 176. Kenseth was en route to take over the third position at the time of the accident at the exit of turn two. Kenseth recorded 227 of 250 laps.

Last Race: Kenseth and the Visine Chevrolet had a successful afternoon of racing at "The Track Too Tough To Tame" by notching the team's best finish of the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series season thus far. Kenseth drove the No. 17 machine to a second-place finish at Darlington Raceway, after leading more laps than any other driver (66). He started third and competed near the front the entire race. At one point, Kenseth stretched his lead over Kevin Harvick to 5.2 seconds on lap 72. A bad set of tires on the final pit stop at lap 123 sealed the fate of the Visine Racing Team at Darlington. Kenseth followed Jeff Green to the checkered flag.

Sponsor Notes: Partners on the Visine Chevrolet for the Cheez-It 250 are BenGay and Cortizone, products produced by Pfizer Consumer Health Care.
