Cheez-It 250 - Jimmie Johnson Notes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 20, 2001) – Jimmie Johnson and the No. 92 Excedrin Racing team make their way to “Thunder Valley” this weekend as they head to the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn., for the Cheez-It 250 on Saturday, March 24. The concrete speedway is the highest banked track the NASCAR Busch Series visits.

Johnson and the Excedrin Racing team are heading to Bristol with high hopes after a disappointing finish in Darlington, due to an engine failure.

“We all have to hold our heads up and move on after Darlington,” explains Johnson. “If the Excedrin Racing team can make a top-10 qualifying run this weekend, we will be in good position for the race. That's all we can think about now. If we qualify back in the pack, we put ourselves in the position to get into a lot of trouble throughout the day.”

Johnson is looking forward to going back to Bristol and says the track reminds him of his ASA (American Speed Association) roots.

“We ran a lot of high-banked tracks like Bristol Motor Speedway in the ASA,” says Johnson. “I'm fired up to go back to Bristol. It's a track I feel comfortable on. I know that the Excedrin Racing team will help me out in the pits as well, to keep me running up front.”

Johnson finished 24th in the 2000 spring race after getting involved in a wreck during the closing laps of the race. Johnson knows the way to beat Bristol is to stay up front and avoid the wrecks.

“The key to Bristol is a good qualifying run,” explains Johnson. “If you can start up front and stay there all day, you stand a chance of avoiding the majority of the wrecks. The Excedrin Racing team's goal this week is to leave Bristol with a top-10 finish.”

Johnson is currently ninth in the NASCAR Busch Series points standings as he heads to Bristol for the sixth race of the 2001 season.

Herzog Motorsports is a successful, championship-winning race team. Based in St. Joseph, Mo.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Milwaukee, Wis., Herzog Motorsports fields competitive racing programs in the American Speed Association (ASA) and NASCAR Busch Series.

The Cheez-It 250 airs live on the FX Network and PRN Radio Saturday, March 24. The telecast will start at 12:30 p.m. EST.
