Outback Steakhouse 200 Matt Kenseth Notes

Matt Kenseth / Visine Racing Track Notes for the Outback Steakhouse 200

EVENT INFORMATION: Site - Phoenix International Raceway, Avondale, Arizona; Time and Date - 3:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, November 4; Live Coverage - TNN (cable television) and MRN (radio); Qualifying - 5 p.m. ET, Thursday, Nov. 2

NEW EDITION: The Reiser Enterprises stable of cars has grown by one and car No. 15 makes its debut at Phoenix. Matt Kenseth, Jason Schuler and the Visine Racing Team took the car to Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina a few weeks ago to put a few laps on the car before practice begins Thursday.

ONE TO GO: Only one race remains on the Busch Series schedule for 2000 after this weekend and Kenseth will drive the Visine Chevrolet at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Kenseth finished 38th last year in the 200-lap event after being collected in an accident on lap two. In his debut at the track in 1997, Kenseth finished sixth and improved on that performance in 1998 with a fourth-place finish.

IN THE STANDINGS: The Visine Racing Team remains fifth in the owners standings. The No. 17 entry has 3,743 points and is 138 points from fourth place, 210 points from third place, 339 points from second place and 932 behind the first spot. Matt Kenseth is 20th in the Busch Series drivers standings with only 18 starts.

KENSETH COMMENTS ON PHOENIX: "This is still a fairly new track for me, but we managed to finish in the top 10 last year. We've got a new car for this weekend, just trying a new chassis. I made a few laps at Greenville-Pickens just to get it ready for this weekend. I think it'll be a good car.

"I think pit strategy could be a factor this weekend since last year we only had one caution fall the entire race. We aren't too concerned about tire wear but we hope to stay up front and be smart in timing our pit stops. If the car isn't handling well, we've got to be aggressive in changes because everyone will be stretching their fuel and tire window."

RECAPPING LAST YEAR'S OUTBACK STEAKHOUSE 200 (November 6, 1999): It was the debut of the NASCAR Busch Series at the one-mile paved speedway. Kenseth qualified his No. 17 machine in sixth position for the inaugural Outback Steakhouse 200. The veterans of the speedway dominated much of the event, but Kenseth held strong to finish eighth.

RECAPPING THE SAM'S CLUB 250 (October 29, 2000): The first caution flag fell during lap 75 just in time for the first scheduled pit stop for the Visine Chevrolet. Jason Schuler told the crew he was having trouble turning through the corners, so crew chief Russ Strupp called for air pressure adjustments. Back in action on the track, Schuler spent the next several circuits assessing his car. During the next pit stop at lap 113, more aggressive changes were called for in the form of a wedge adjustment and air pressure adjustments. On the restart at lap 117, Schuler, who was 11th, was shuffled high out of the racing lane in turn three, collecting rubber debris on his new tires. He spent the next several laps regaining control of his Visine Chevrolet but was forced back to 26th place. Schuler worked his way back into the top 20 shortly after a pit stop at lap 188. Trouble came on lap 214 when Schuler was one of a trio of cars spinning across the frontstretch. The Visine Racing Team worked on the right front fender during the caution to keep Schuler on the track and on the lead lap. When the checkered flag fell at lap 250, Schuler remained in 17th place and on the lead lap.

SPONSOR NOTES: Partners on the Visine Chevrolet for the Outback Steakhouse 200 are BenGay and Cortizone, products produced by Pfizer Warner-Lambert Consumer Healthcare.
