Outback Steakhouse 200 Elton Sawyer Notes

Elton Sawyer / Lysol Racing Pre-Race Notes for the Outback Steakhouse 200

EVENT INFORMATION: Site - Phoenix International Raceway, Avondale, Arizona; Time and Date - 3:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, November 4; Live Coverage - TNN (cable television) and MRN (radio); Qualifying - 5 p.m. ET, Thursday, Nov. 2

SAWYER ON PHOENIX: "I feel that we will be more competitive when we return to Phoenix this year. Last year we carried a standard car here, but this year we are returning with a drop snout car. When you get on tracks of one mile or less, turning in the center of the corners can be a problem. The drop car will enable us to turn better. This is a neat track and I look forward to heading out there. A lot of the mile tracks we go to have only one groove, but this track is wide, so if your car is running well, you can pass on the outside. We had a strong run last weekend and I am looking forward to the same in Phoenix."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Elton Sawyer was born on November 5. Tom Stewart celebrates his birthday on November 7.

EQUIPMENT: The Lysol team will be compete with the same car Sawyer drove to third-place finishes at Myrtle Beach and South Boston and a sixth-place finish at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

LAST RACE (MEMPHIS MOTORSPORTS PARK): Elton Sawyer tied his best finish of the 2000 Busch Series season with a second-place finish in last Sunday's Sam's Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park. After starting fourth, Sawyer never dropped out of the top five and valiantly tried to catch winner Kevin Harvick in the closing laps of the event. Throughout most of the day, Sawyer was chasing Jeff Green's yellow NesQuik Chevrolet, which was either in first or second place. Sawyer managed to pass Green for second place with eight laps to go. After passing Green, Sawyer set his sights on Harvick, who managed to jump out in front of the field during the last few late caution periods. Sawyer charged toward Harvick and with a few more laps may have been able to give Harvick a run. Sawyer finished less than five-tenths of a second behind Harvick.

LAST YEAR IN PHOENIX: The Lysol team did not reach their high expectations in the 1999 Outback Steakhouse 200. After starting 25th, Sawyer worked his way up to a 15th-place finish. Sawyer's car ran well all day and he stayed out of trouble. However, he just couldn't catch up with the leaders during green flag runs and the race produced only one caution flag. Last year was the inaugural event for the NASCAR Busch Series in Phoenix.
