Sam's Town 250 Elton Sawyer Notes

Elton Sawyer / Lysol Racing Pre-Race Notes for the Sam's Town 250

EVENT INFORMATION: Site - Memphis Motorsports Park, Memphis, Tennessee; Time and Date - 1 p.m. ET, Sunday, October 29; Live Coverage - TNN (cable television) and MRN (radio); Qualifying - 2:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, Oct. 28

SAWYER ON MEMPHIS: "We had a great race here last year and finished third. The car we carried here was a standard snout car and the two cars that beat us (Jeff Green and Dale Earnhardt Jr.) ran drop snout cars. Our thought process was that to be even more competitive this year, we would also bring a drop car. It will be the same car we ran in Richmond. This track reminds me a little of Richmond except Memphis is a little slower and the corners are a little tighter.

"Looking back to Rockingham, we went there to win a race. Unfortunately that did not happen but now looking to Memphis, our mindset is the same. We have three races left and we want to win and we are not going to worry about the points right now. We are going to finish in the top 10 in points at the end of the season and if we have the opportunity to win, the point situation will take care of itself.

"This season we have been competitive and had some really good cars but have found ways to keep ourselves from being up front, whether it was running out of fuel, lug nuts or accidents. If we had been able to capitalize on those good runs we had, I have no doubt that we would be third or fourth in the points, if not better."

1999 SAM'S TOWN 250: Elton Sawyer and the Lysol team recorded a third-place finish in the inaugural Sam's Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park. They recorded their fourth top-five finish of the 1999 season and first since a win at New Hampshire International Speedway in May. The Lysol team battled their way to third from a 19th-place starting position. Though many drivers had mixed reviews of the .75-mile tri-oval, Sawyer said he liked the facility. Sawyer had a commanding presence in the top-five for much of the race and had a heated battle with Todd Bodine for the lead during the middle portion of the event.

THE EQUIPMENT: The drop snout car the Lysol team will be carrying this weekend has competed this year at Nazareth Speedway (second), Gateway International Raceway (10th) and Richmond International Raceway (19th).

LAST RACE (North Carolina Speedway): Elton Sawyer was on his way to his fifth top-five finish of the season in last Saturday's Sam's Club 200 at North Carolina Speedway when an altercation with Jason Keller made Sawyer spin out during lap 195 of 197. Sawyer, who was third at the time, was relegated to a 19th-place finish. The incident occurred when Sawyer attempted to pass Keller for the third position. Once Sawyer and Keller were door-to-door, they made contact. Sawyer's car turned sideways and spun down the track as he tried to save the car. The Lysol Ford escaped with only a set of flat-spotted tires. However, Sawyer lost positions and became the last driver on the lead lap, creating a one-lap dash to the finish of the race.

POINTS RACE: Sawyer remains sixth in the point standings, 112 points behind Ron Hornaday (fifth). Car owner Brad Akins remains seventh in the owner's standings.
