Sam's Town 250 Ashton Lewis Notes

Ashton Lewis Jr. / Lewis Motorsports Pre-Race Notes for the Sam's Town 250

EVENT INFORMATION: Site - Memphis Motorsports Park, Millington, Tennessee; Time and Date - 1 p.m. ET, Sunday, October 29; Live Coverage - TNN (television) and MRN (radio); Qualifying - 12:30 p.m. ET, Friday, Oct. 27.

PAY FOR PERFORMANCE: Lewis Motorsports team owner Ashton Lewis is putting a unique offer on the table for the title and promotional rights for his team in 2001. The first payment installment is not due until the mid-point of the season, and if the team is not ranked in the top 25 by the time the payment is due, the team will release the sponsor from its financial obligation.

"This is a performance-based business," said Lewis, co-owner of the team and father of the driver, Ashton Lewis Jr. "We are looking at this as a way to prove that our team has what it takes to be in the Busch Series. We are confident in our ability to perform on the track and think that we are offering a sponsor a no lose opportunity."

"MARCEL" ON TRACK AGAIN: This will be Ashton Lewis Jr.'s first trip to the .75-mile oval. The team is carrying the same car it competed with last week at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham, N.C. The car is 5-for-5 in qualifying for events in the top 36 this season. The car has also qualified for both races at Darlington Raceway and both Dover Downs events.

"Marcel is one of our better cars," Lewis said. "I have made the race on our qualifying time each time we have raced this car and we had our best start (11th) of the year in that car in the spring race at Darlington. I have talked with several drivers and they have told me that Memphis can be difficult to get around. There are several bumps going into turn one and you have to be careful not to overdrive the car as you enter turn three. I will spend the first part of practice learning my way around the track and then I can concentrate on qualifying."

Recurring Story Lines:

* Lewis Motorsports will offer title and promotional rights for its team in 2001. The first installment will be due at the mid-point of the season, but only if the team is in the top 25 in points. If the team has not met its end of the deal, the sponsor is released of its financial obligations.

* Ashton Lewis Jr., a mechanical engineering graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and Charlie Lewis designed and built a NASCAR Late Model stock car as a senior project for Ashton. The duo went on to win six races and five poles at Langley Speedway and Southampton Speedway in Virginia during the 1996 season.

* All of the Lewis Motorsports cars are named after characters that appeared in many of the late Jerry Clower's stories and tall tales. This week's car is named Marcel.

* Lewis Motorsports is one of the few family-owned and family operated ran teams left in NASCAR.
