All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300 Elton Sawyer Notes
Elton Sawyer, No. 98 Lysol Ford Taurus NASCAR Busch Series All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300 Lowe's Motor Speedway, Concord, N.C. October 7, 1:05 p.m. ET; TBS (television), MRN (radio)TEAM OWNER FINDS USE FOR RECALLED FIRESTONES: Brad Akins, owner of Akins Motorsports, one of the largest car dealerships in the Southeast, has come up with innovative ways to recycle recalled Firestone tires. Akins, who has replaced almost 5,000 tires to date, has given many of the tires to local softball and baseball teams. The teams use the tires for pitching and batting drills. SAWYER ON CHARLOTTE: "I am optimistic coming back here. This has been an up and down track for us, but we've had good qualifying runs the last two times we were here. I like running here so hopefully, we will run well this weekend. This is definitely a tricky track. The temperature is a big factor so we want to make sure we stay on top of it. You have to be careful because you can over adjust your car to keep up with the weather. In order to compensate for that, we look back at our notes and see if something worked well in the past. We qualified third here in the spring and had a decent car all day so we will most likely bring the same type of setup here this weekend." THE EQUIPMENT: Sawyer will be returning to Lowe's Motor Speedway this week with the same car he took to a ninth-place finish after starting third in the May event at Lowe's. The car has also competed this season at Rockingham, Texas, California, Michigan and both events at Darlington. The average start for the car this year is 13th and its average finish is 14th. THE POINTS RACE: After a 33rd-place finish in Dover two weeks ago, Sawyer dropped to sixth place in the driver standings. Sawyer sits a mere 26 points behind Ron Hornaday Jr. (fifth). Car owner Brad Akins has dropped to seventh. MAY RECAP: The May race in Charlotte may have been the turning point of the season for Elton Sawyer and the Lysol Racing team. In 1999, Sawyer and the Lysol team had eight top-10 finishes and three top-five finishes through the spring race in Charlotte. In 2000 the team had four less top-10 finishes entering Charlotte, but Sawyer earned three of them in the previous four races. Sawyer finished ninth in May, and when he was asked after the race what turned his team's season around, Sawyer said it was a mental change within the team. He felt the team began working as one, had confidence in each other and also had a better grasp on what the 2000 Taurus needed. Sawyer has now accumulated four top-five finishes and 13 top-10 finishes this season. DOVER RECAP: Dover Downs International Speedway received rain Friday night and Saturday morning before the MBNA.com 200. The rain delayed the start of the race by approximately a half hour, but those uncertainties caused by the rain did not stop Sawyer's run to the front -- an unfortunate accident did. Sawyer was on his way to his 14th top-10 finish of the season, but during lap 149 he was involved in an accident with Michael Waltrip and Ron Hornaday Jr. The accident relegated Sawyer to a 33rd-place finish after a 19th-place start.
