All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300 Ashton Lewis Notes

Ashton Lewis Jr.
No. 46 Lewis Motorsports Chevrolet
NASCAR Busch Series All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300
October 7, 2000; Lowe's Motor Speedway, Concord, N.C.
A Quick Look Back:

--Ashton Lewis is coming off of his fourth top-25 finish of the season at the MBNA.com 200 at Dover Downs International Speedway. Lewis started 20th and ran strong for the first quarter of the event before a loose wheel forced the 28-year-old to pit out of sequence. The mishap cost him two laps to the leaders and he finished 25th.

"We had a very good car at Dover and before the problem I felt that we had a car capable of running in the top 15 cars," Lewis said after the race. "Even after the pit stop the car was good. Once you go down a couple of laps at Dover it is hard to make up laps."

A Look Ahead:

--Lewis said he feels that he owes his team a race at Lowe's Motor Speedway after failing to qualify for the spring event at LMS.

"The team gave me a very good car here in the spring and I overdrove the car in three and four. The car stuck so well in turns one and two that I felt that I could really push the car on the other end. I learned a big lesson that day on what not to do. I really want to make it up to the guys this weekend with a good qualifying run."

--The team is carrying the same car that finished 17th at Michigan International Speedway in August. The team based their decision on the data they gathered during a two-day test last week at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The team tested the car they ran here in the spring along with the Michigan car.

"Even though the car we ran here in the spring is my favorite car, we made the decision to run the Michigan car instead," Lewis said. "The car that we are running has a little different front-end geometry. During the second day of testing, we learned a few things with our race setup that I think will help us during qualifying."

--Ashton Lewis said he has mixed feelings of losing some of the traditional short tracks in the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series schedule while adding new and bigger venues.

"I haven't raced at South Boston and Myrtle Beach so I really won't know what I will be missing. However, I really hate that we are losing the race at Nashville. There is a lot of history and tradition in both the Busch Series and Winston Cup at that track. I wish that some of the people who are building these new tracks would follow the example of Bristol (Motor Speedway) and realize that you can build a half-mile track and still put people in the stands. The fans like to see races at the tight bullrings just as much as the big mile and a half ovals."

Recurring Story Lines:

--Ashton Lewis Jr., a mechanical engineering graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and Charlie Lewis designed and built a NASCAR Late Model stock car as a senior project for Ashton. The duo went on to win six races and five poles at Langley Speedway and Southampton Speedway in Virginia during the 1996 season.

--All of the Lewis Motorsports cars are named after characters that appeared in many of the late Jerry Clower's stories and tall tales. This week's car is named Roid.

--Lewis Motorsports is one of the few family-owned and family operated ran teams left in NASCAR.
