HotWheels.com 300 Elton Sawyer Notes

Elton Sawyer / Lysol Racing Pre-Race Notes for the HotWheels.com 300

EVENT INFORMATION: Site - Homestead-Miami Speedway, Homestead, Florida; Time and Date - 1:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, November 11; Live Coverage - NBC (television) and MRN (radio); Qualifying - 12:30 p.m. ET, Friday, Nov. 10

SAWYER ON HOMESTEAD: "Last year we ran OK, but we weren't as competitive as we would have liked. We came and tested here several weeks ago and that did not go as well as we anticipated. However, we made some changes on the car we tested and I think it will be much better. We are carrying the same car we ran in Memphis and Nazareth. Along with Homestead, Memphis and Nazareth are flat race tracks and we typically run well at those types of tracks. They all have similar characteristics, but the key is to turn in the corners. That is why I think we made the right decision to bring a drop snout car here this weekend."

SAWYER ON HIS SEASON: "There were quite a few races this year that we ran well but did not finish well. We were not as consistent as we were last year and I think that hurt us. Obviously, we had higher expectations and some things that happened to us were out of our control. I think we easily had the potential to be fourth or fifth in the points and even win a race or two. We had a stretch in the summer where everything was coming together but it seems as though after Pikes Peak we were never able to get that momentum back. You definitely have to run consistently in the top five to contend for the championship. Jeff Green showed that this year. We were able to accumulate more top-five finishes than last year, but it still wasn't enough. We just need to work on some little things to step up our program. We are going to work to make our cars faster and run just as hard as we can every week to contend for the championship."

THE EQUIPMENT: The car that Elton Sawyer and the Lysol team will compete with this weekend has been a part of three top-10 finishes this season, including events at Memphis Motorsports Park (second), Nazareth Speedway (second) and Gateway International Raceway (10th). The car was also used at Richmond, where the team finished 19th. In four races, the average finish for the car is 8.25.

LAST RACE (PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY): Elton Sawyer and the Lysol Racing team started 34th in last Saturday's Outback Steakhouse 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. Throughout the weekend the team made a multitude of adjustments to the car and by the end of the team's final practice on Friday, Sawyer and company felt much better about the car. The team was ninth fastest on the practice sheet and felt that the changes would translate to a good car for the race on Saturday. Sunday's race proved that to be true as Sawyer gained 23 positions to finish in 11th place. Sawyer's pit crew made only a minor air pressure adjustment on the first pit stop on lap 50. On the team's final stop on lap 142, the pit crew changed four tires and added fuel for an 18.3-second pit stop, the fourth fastest stop of the entire field. Sawyer also gained five bonus points when he led a lap before his last pit stop. The 11th-place finish was Sawyer's 18th top-15 finish of the season.

1999 HOTWHEELS.COM 300: The Lysol brand and Elton Sawyer secured their first top-five finish in the Championship together after last season's finale in Homestead. The fifth-place finish in the title chase was Sawyer's second straight appearance in the top five. It was Lysol's first top-10 finish in the standings in its seven-year association as a primary team sponsor in the NASCAR Busch Series. The top five was secured after Sawyer finished 13th in the race.
