HotWheels.com 300 Ashton Lewis Notes

Ashton Lewis Jr. / Lewis Motorsports Pre-Race Notes for the HotWheels.com 300

EVENT INFORMATION: Site - Homestead-Miami Speedway, Homestead, Florida; Time and Date - 1:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, November 11; Live Coverage - NBC (television) and MRN (radio); Qualifying - 12:30 p.m. ET, Friday, Nov. 10.

LEWIS READY TO STAND THE "TEST" OF TIME: Ashton Lewis Jr. has been chomping at the bit to get back to South Florida since he left three weeks ago. Lewis spent two days testing at the 1.5-mile track and was unofficially fast enough to sit on the outside pole for last year's HotWheels.com 300.

"We had two very good days of testing here last month," Lewis said. "We were surprised that our standard car was better than the drop snout car, but were happy with the results. We have had a couple of disappointing weeks and I really want to end the season on a high note for all of the guys on the team. We have given our all throughout the year and this would be a great way to cap off the season."

LEWIS TAKES A LOOK BACK AT 2000: The 28-year-old driver felt the high of qualifying ninth for the SunCom 200 at Darlington Raceway in March and the great run at a top-10 finish before finishing 17th at Michigan International Speedway in August. The team also felt the low of missing races due to the growing pains of a first-year team.

"As a first-year team we have really experienced it all this season," Lewis said. "I think that a lot of teams now realize that we are an up-and-coming team, but we realize that being a top team in the Busch Series doesn't happen overnight. We have built a very good base for the future and look forward to next year."

Recurring Story Lines:

Lewis Motorsports has a unique offer for the title and promotional rights for its team in 2001. The first installment will be due at the mid-point of the season, but only if the team is in the top 25 in points. If the team has not met its end of the deal, the sponsor is released of its financial obligations.

Ashton Lewis Jr., a mechanical engineering graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and Charlie Lewis designed and built a NASCAR Late Model stock car as a senior project for Ashton. The duo went on to win six races and five poles at Langley Speedway and Southampton Speedway in Virginia during the 1996 season.

All of the Lewis Motorsports cars are named after characters that appeared in many of the late Jerry Clower's stories and tall tales. This week's car is named Marcel.

Lewis Motorsports is one of the few family-owned and family operated ran teams left in NASCAR.
