MBNA.com 200 Matt Kenseth Notes

Matt Kenseth
No. 17 Visine Chevrolet
NASCAR Busch Series MBNA.com 200
Dover Downs International Speedway,Dover, Del.
September 23, 1 p.m. ET, TNN, MRN
POLE POSITION: Matt Kenseth started from the pole position for the Busch Series race last September at Dover Downs International Speedway. Currently, Kenseth has four pole awards after 100 NASCAR Busch Series starts.

NOT SCARED OF THE MONSTER: Its nickname is the "Monster Mile," but Kenseth shows no fear of the one-mile concrete oval. He has led more laps, 312 thus far, at Dover Downs International Speedway than any other track in his Busch Series career.

CAR NO. 4 WHERE ARE YOU?: "Car No. 4" has been parked in the Reiser Enterprises stable since Dover in September 1999. Kenseth was involved in a turn two accident and finished 38th that day. "Car No. 4" will return to the asphalt this weekend after a 31-race hiatus for the MBNA.com 200.

IN THE STANDINGS: The Visine Racing Team occupies seventh place in Busch Series point standings with 3,120 points. The No. 17 entry is 31 points shy of the sixth spot and 62 points behind fifth place.

MATT KENSETH COMMENTS: "Everyone always wants to know how I could like Dover so much. For one thing, we won here in 1998 and everyone always likes to come to a track where they've been to victory lane. I guess it's like all the other tracks people love to hate like Darlington. These places get reputations for being very unforgiving but for some reason we have found a good setup for this car.

"Obviously pit strategy will play a large role in our game plan for race day. We used two sets of new tires maybe too early in the spring race trying to get the car to handle better. Then I cut a tire and was forced to use our last set of stickers. We had excellent tire wear on that last set. We went over 100 laps and managed to finish third. We'll use those setup notes and hopefully get the Visine Chevy ahead of the game for this race."

RECAPPING THE MBNA PLATINUM 200 (June 3, 2000): It was a monster of a day for Visine Racing driver Matt Kenseth at the one-mile concrete oval of Dover Downs International Speedway. Kenseth recovered from a spin on lap 72 to finish third in the MBNA Platinum 200. Kenseth, who started 16th, made his first pit stop during lap 31. During the next caution period during lap 55, Kenseth returned to pit road for four new tires and a wedge adjustment. A mere 18 laps later, the left rear tire of the Visine Chevrolet went flat, sending Kenseth into a spin. The Visine Racing Team changed four tires once again and topped off on fuel at lap 87 to go the duration of the race without stopping. When the next caution flag was waved at lap 101, Kenseth remained on the track while the majority of the field went to pit lane for service. On the restart of lap 105, Kenseth was third. At lap 111, the Visine Chevrolet was on the point for three laps. The remainder of the race was caution free, and Kenseth remained in third place.

RECAPPING LAST YEAR'S MBNA GOLD 200 (September 25, 1999): Matt Kenseth started the 200-lap race from the best spot in the house - first place. It was his first pole position of the season and the second of his Busch Series career. Kenseth led the most laps of the event, a total of 108, before an accident in turn two with fellow competitor Dale Earnhardt Jr. ended his strong run in the No. 17 Chevrolet. Kenseth completed 120 of 200 laps and recorded a 38th-place finish.

RECAPPING THE AUTOLITE PLATINUM 250 (September 8, 2000): The first caution flag fell only 28 laps into the 250-lap event. Kenseth told his crew his Visine Chevrolet was much too tight to turn off the corners of the .75-mile oval. However, the Visine Chevrolet remained on the track and came in for service at lap 84. Kenseth moved his way through the field to take sixth place by lap 101. The second and final pit stop came at lap 165 with a track bar adjustment, fresh tires and fuel for the Visine Chevrolet. Back on the track, Kenseth was forced to cycle through several cars that elected not to pit. Kenseth paced his way into the top-10 pack to finish eighth.
