MBNA.com 200 Ashton Lewis Notes
Ashton Lewis Jr. No. 46 Lewis Motorsports Chevrolet NASCAR Busch Series - MBNA.com 200 - September 23, 2000 Dover Downs International Speedway - Dover, Del.A Quick Look Back: Ashton Lewis started 35th and finished 42nd in the MBNA Platinum 200 at Dover in June. Lewis was involved in a lap-one incident that included several cars. “The spring race was a big disappointment to me and the entire team,” Lewis said. “After happy hour I felt like we had a car that would have run in the top 20 and then to be caught up in a wreck that wasn’t our fault really got to me. Those types of things happen, but you don’t want to be the one it happens to.” Lewis has two starts at Dover Downs International Speedway with an average starting spot of 34 and finish of 33.5. He has $17,085.00 in career earnings at the Monster Mile. A Look Ahead: Lewis Motorsports employees Tab Boyd and Scott Honan recently celebrated birthdays. Honan (9/14), Boyd (9/18) The team is carrying the same car that Lewis drove at Dover in the spring race. The car also saw action at both Darlington events this season. Lewis started 11th and finished 38th in the SunCom 200 and started 29th and finished 30th in the Dura Lube 200. It is one of Lewis’ favorite cars in the Lewis Motorsports stable. “I really like this car,” Lewis said. “It is the one that I qualified 11th with at Darlington in the spring and it ran great here in the spring. It has been involved in two crashes once at Darlington and at Dover in June. Both times I felt that we were on our way to top-20 finishes when we were caught up in other peoples accidents.” Lewis Motorsports has set their teams goals for the remainder of the 2000 season. “We have six races left on the schedule for this year and we have set our goals for what we want to accomplish for those races. We’re working to make sure that we qualify in the top 25 and I’m not going to be happy if we are not finishing in the top 20 each week.” Recurring Story Lines: Ashton Lewis Jr., a mechanical engineering graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and Charlie Lewis designed and built a NASCAR Late Model stock car as a senior project for Ashton. The duo went on to win six races and five poles at Langley Speedway and Southampton Speedway in Virginia during the 1996 season. All of the Lewis Motorsports cars are named after characters that appeared in many of the late Jerry Clower’s stories and tall tales. This week’s car is named Marcel. Lewis Motorsports is one of the few family-owned and family operated ran teams left in NASCAR.
