Martin Hopes to Break a Few More Records Before Leaving Busch Series
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - With only one race remaining on Mark
Martin's "Farewell Tour" in the NASCAR Busch Series, he already
holds an impressive number of records. In only 199 starts, Martin
has earned 45 wins, 91 top five and 125 top-10 finishes and 27 poles.
With those statistics, Martin has already broken the following records:
All time number of wins - 45 (he broke Jack Ingram's record of 31 races in October 1997).
Number of wins for a car number - he has accumulated 39 wins in the #60 Winn-Dixie Ford.
Number of wins on a superspeedway - 37 (his most recent at Darlington in September).
Number of weekend sweeps where he won both the NASCAR Winston
Cup and Busch Series events - four times (Talladega 4/97, Charlotte
10/95, Michigan 8/93 and Darlington 9/93).
He holds the record for most wins at seven active tracks - Rockingham
(11), Darlington (7), Charlotte (6), Richmond (5), Atlanta (3),
Texas (3) and Michigan (2 - a tie with Todd Bodine).
Martin's numerous wins has also given Jack Roush the record of
most wins for a car owner - 47 (38 by Martin and nine by Jeff Burton).
Martin's final Busch race and his 200th start will be next weekend
at Homestead-Miami Speedway. If he is able to win the race and
the pole, he will either add to his existing records, or create
some new ones. Following are the records he would be able to tie, or break at Homestead:
He is one pole from tying Tommy Ellis' record of 28 career poles.
Martin was third going into the season with 23 poles, but passed
Sam Ard with his second pole of the season at Darlington.
If he is able to win from the pole, he will break Ard's record
of most wins from the pole. Martin is currently tied with Ard with
nine wins from the pole, three of which came this season.
"It is really amazing that I have been able to accomplish all of
these things," Martin said. "I loved to watch guys like Jack Ingram
and Sam Ard race when I was younger, so it is hard for me to believe
that I could match, or beat, what they have done. It is a real
honor to have my name in the Busch record books for so many things.
I never take the time to reflect on my career and realize the things
I've done. It always surprises me to see the numbers on paper because it just doesn't seem real."
Roush Racing is a subsidiary of Roush Industries and operates
nine teams; five in NASCAR Winston Cup with drivers Mark Martin,
Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch and Kevin Lepage; two in the
Busch Series with Martin and Burton; and two in Craftsman Truck with Busch and Greg Biffle.
