Elliott Hopes to Win First 600

The Coca-Cola 600 is recognized as one of NASCAR Winston Cups "majors" because it is the longest race of the season. This week is much different from others in that qualifying is scheduled to take place Wednesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway with the race set for Sunday evening. Bill Elliott will also be eligible for the Winston No Bull 5 million dollar bonus and he spoke about the challenge presented by this week's schedule.

WHAT IS NEXT WEEK LIKE FOR YOU WITH QUALIFYING ON WEDNESDAY AND THE RACE ON SUNDAY. IS IT A LONG WEEK?

"Well, you pretty much expect that when you come here to Charlotte. Charlotte is always a place where you expect to be here a lot of hours for a long period of time. It kind of wears on the guys, but once the race starts Sunday night you're glad it's started. I've not won a 600. I've run good in the 600 before like here in '97 we had a really good car. The people I've got on the car right now, we've all really come together very well the last several races and I'm looking forward to it."

SINCE YOU HAVEN'T WON A 600, IS THIS ONE RACE YOU REALLY WANT BAD?

"I think you look at it from the standpoint that you come in and do the best you can. If you've got a car that's capable of winning the race, that's what you put together and the rest of it you just let it fall where it may. Just like I said, here in '97 we really had a good race car and led a lot of the race but couldn't capitalize on it and Jeff Gordon ended up winning the race. That's where we have to overcome some of these other guys that have been so good here in the past."
