STATESVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 7, 2000) -- After missing the last two NASCAR
Winston Cup races due to a fractured left kneecap, Bill Elliott will practice
on Friday in hopes of attempting to qualify for this weekend's Chevrolet
Monte Carlo 400 (Sept. 9) at Richmond International Raceway.
Elliott suffered a multi-fracture of his left kneecap in a home accident,
Aug. 22, in Blairsville, Ga. He had surgery the same day at HEALTHSOUTH
Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala. The 90-minute surgery was performed by Dr.
James Andrews, who inserted three steel pins and a steel wire to repair the
fractured kneecap.
The injury forced Elliott to miss the GoRacing.com 500 at Bristol Motor
Speedway (Aug. 26) and the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway (Sept. 3).
NASCAR Busch Series regular David Green drove the McDonald's No. 94 Ford
Taurus in Elliott's absence. Green finished 36th in Bristol after being
involved in an accident and then posted a 25th-place finish in Darlington
last Sunday.
Since he was discharged from the Birmingham hospital on Aug. 24, Elliott has
been undergoing therapy at a rehabilitation center near his home in
Blairsville and at HEALTHSOUTH Medical Center. When he is at the track,
Elliott will receive therapy from the Wake Forest University medical unit,
provided by Motor Racing Outreach (MRO).
