Elliott Richmond Pre-Race Quotes
BILL ELLIOTT (No. 9 Dodge Dealers Dodge Intrepid R/T)
NOTE: Elliott drove through a late-race incident Sunday at Darlington and
finished fifth. It was his second top five finish in the past three races and
his fourth top 10 in the past six starts. Elliott is also one of three
drivers with no DNFs this season. Elliott moved to 14th in the series
standings with 11 races remaining.
"It's been a pretty tough summer. We've tested a lot, we've done a lot of
things. It's hard to keep a good, steady pace. That's what you've got to do
the next number of races. We've got some pretty tough places we're going to
go back to. It's a lot more physical than it was 10 or 15 years ago. You went
around the race track at 150 mph 15 years ago, and you're running around 190
mph today. You need to be in a little bit better shape.
"I got used up (at Darlington). That's just part of it.
"We need to run well every week. It doesn't matter if it's Darlington or
Richmond or whatever. That's what you've got to do. Darlington has been good
to me in the past. I've got some good memories there. That's the past. I've
got to worry about next week and the week after. That's what's going to make
this team better. It's not the past.
"I'd say if you're in the top 15 that would be a good year, especially
with what Ray had to struggle through to get this deal started. With what
we've gone through to this point, I feel like we've done well. We just need
to take every race and run the best we can every race and then the points
will take care of themselves.
"We're getting better in a lot of areas. Our communication is good. We've
got some good people with us making good decisions. We're going to have a bad
race every now and then, but just getting the team to gel together is as much
of this business as anything. I think the chemistry is pretty well there now.
"I don't look at these places whether it's a mile or a half mile or 10
miles. I just go in and race the pavement. It's the same story no matter
where you race. Track position means everything. You've got to have good pit
stops, a good handling car and a little luck on your side."
