Bill Elliott Qualifying Quotes
"Everybody picked up in qualifying. It's the type of race track where the
speeds will pick up in the afternoon. We hit it at a pretty good time. We
tested here and were about two seconds slower. I felt like the track would be
in the 36-second bracket for qualifying. The high 34s were pretty impressive.
"I don't know how to make a prediction of what Sunday is all about. You
watch the races and you listen. Look at Joe Nemechek last week. You don't
count him as one of the cars to win the race, but he wins the race. Some of
the guys who could have won don't run very good. In this business, it's kind
of a crap shoot. You throw your best guess at it. You make your best guess
and throw it at it.
"Qualifying is one aspect of it. I came down here a couple of weeks ago
and tested, and I was terrible. We came back and made some pretty good
adjustments and got a whole lot better. I was kind of worried coming back
down here where I'd end up. Mike (crew chief Ford) and all the guys really
worked hard. That's what this business is all about. It isn't about me.
"It was a Dodge Day Afternoon.
"It's been a roller-coaster year. I look back on it, and I felt like we
were really making some gains until the last three or four weeks. We've had a
lot of things happen, motor problems to accident problems to a lot of odds
and ends and we just can't see to get the monkey off our back. Maybe we can
get things turned around and at least headed in the right direction for next
year.
"From my standpoints, it's not been too bad. I can kind of walk away and
catch a breath and come back into it. It makes it a whole lot easier from my
standpoint.
"Rudd put up an awful good number in practice, and it gets around this
place pretty well. It's all about getting everything right. If you hit every
corner right you can post some pretty good numbers.
"You can't count anybody out in this business. Anybody has a chance to
win the race. The tire has changed every time we've been here. I'm a little
disappointed we haven't won yet, but if we keep going in the same direction,
I think we can put some good things together. I don't know if this sport is
all about winning. It's all about running good and being competitive on
Sunday afternoon. I'd like to win a race. I'll do my best this week, next
week and the week after."
