Global Crossing @ The Glen
Watkins Glen International
Uneventful Day for Elliott at The Glen
August 13, 2000 - This is the type of year we should be having, Bill Elliott (along with Possum Trotter) nailing down two solid finishes in a row. After notching a third last week at Indy, Elliott and the McDonald's team finished 13th on the road course at Watkins Glen.
For the second week in a row, Elliott was able to dodge any bad luck that might come his way and bring the car home in tact. After battling with Lady Luck for so long, that is an accomplishment in its self. Not only did Bill bring the car home in one piece, he claimed back-to-back top-15 finishes for the third time this season.
Elliott's day at The Glen can be described in one word, uneventful.
"It was an
uneventful day," said Elliott. "I mean, it was good for us. I had just a few little
problems that got me back in the pack, but I couldn't overcome it and that's
just the way it was. Nobody, if they got back there was any good. Track
position is everything here."
Elliott and the Drive-Thru Crew did try to solve the 'track position' problem on Elliott's final pit stop. While running 22nd, Elliott and the crew went for a two-tire stop to gain Bill six positions on the track.
On a somewhat down note, Elliott did lose a spot in the Winston Cup point standings. With Steve Park winning the race at The Glen, he gained four positions in the standings, causing Elliott to slip into 15th. Elliott now has amassed 2,221 points this season, 944 points behind point leader Bobby Labonte and 14 points behind 14th place Dale Earnhradt Jr.
Rain Washes Out Qualifying @ The Glen
The final road course weekend of the season got off to a slow start
as rain hampered the NASCAR Winston Cup Series all day at Watkins Glen
International.
Practice was scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and a dozen cars were
able to get out and make a couple of laps, but then the rain began to fall.
The weather didn't clear until 3:30 p.m. at which time NASCAR decided to
give the teams an hour of practice and postpone qualifying until 10 a.m.
Saturday morning.
The qualifying session will consist of one lap and will lock in the
top 36 times for Sunday's running of the Global Crossing at the Glen. The
final seven spots will be determined by car owner points.
The Global Crossing at the Glen is scheduled for Sunday at 12:30
Watkins Glen Notes
Elliott has never won at Watkins Glen, but he hopes to change that this
weekend with the same car he drove at Sears Point
Qualified 8th for that
event, but had mechanical problems on race day and finished only 98 of the
112 laps for a 35th-place finish
Coming off an impressive 3rd-place finish
at Indianapolis last week, his first top-five since running 4th at Las
Vegas.
